Our first Skype call

This is our first time talking to our friends in Dresden, Ontario.  We are partnered up to talk about the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane for the 2014 Global Read Aloud.  Today we asked questions about what stores they have in their town, what their playground is like, and  what they are learning in Math.  We learned that they have Tim Hortons, a Walmart about 20 min away, banks and drug stores too.  They are learning Place Value in math, just like us.  Their playground has 3 slides and not a lot of grass.  They were really surprised to hear that our school yard is on top of a hill and we get to slide at recess in the winter.  They also were amazed to hear that we have 3 soccer fields.   Their school is from JK to Grade 8 and they have about 400 students.

Loren says it was pretty awesome to talk to them because we could see their faces instead of just chatting in our Edmodo group.

Katie thinks it's a neat way to make some new friends.

Janica thought they asked us some pretty good questions about what was going to happen to Edward.
We also talked about the weather.  We hope we can talk again soon.

Bus Safety

We went over our bus safety procedures with 2 of our SVSD drivers this am.  We went over some very good reminders of how we need to behave when we are on the bus.  This afternoon we watched this video...
All About the Bus

We thought that it was really neat that it was created in Manitoba.  We loved singing along!

We also watched this video which does a great job of showing us how NOT to behave on the bus!

Harvest Lunch

We thoroughly enjoyed our turkey lunch all together in our gym. We are very thankful for our families, friends, and school community.

Terry Fox/Grandmother's Walk

The rain stopped just long enough for us to go on our walk.  Thanks to all the parents & grandparents who joined us.  Thanks also to all the generous children & families our class raised $78 for the Terry Fox Foundation. We're anxiously awaiting the final tally for our school. If we raised $500, Mr. Kopecky agreed to have a pie thrown at him at our next assembly!

Thanksgiving Geocache

Thanks to Mrs. Betcher for organizing our first geocache!  It was a great way to burn off our turkey dinner!  Big thanks to the grade 5 students who came to guide us!  It was an absolutely fantastic fall afternoon!

Sharing jokes

A fun way to end the day today!

Pies for Terry Fox

Mr. Kopecky challenged Taylor School students and staff to raise money for the Terry Fox foundation.  He agreed to have a pie thrown in his face if we raised $500.    To sweeten the deal, Mrs. Stankewich (our most wonderful secretary) agreed to take a pie if we raised $1000. We raised $893!!  An anonymous donor supplied the additional $107 to help us teach our goal!
At our October assembly, one lucky student from our class was selected to deliver the pie to Mr. K! It was awesome!

Global Read Aloud begins!

We're so excited!  Our class is participating in the 2014 Global Read Aloud.  This project began several years ago by a teacher in Wisconsin.  She thought it would be awesome to have classrooms connect to discuss a common book.  It has grown considerably!  This year we are 23 of over 296,000 students in over 60 different countries participating.  I introduced the book I chose from the 5 options on Friday.  We are going to be reading Kate diCamillo's The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  I have read this aloud several times in previous years, much to the delight of my students (and me!).  It has become one of my favourites.
This year, we will be connecting with Mrs. Long's Grade 3 class in Dresden, Ontario.  We introduced ourselves through our Edmodo group.  We were delighted to hear their predictions for the story and also share some information about ourselves and where we live.  Not only are we going to enjoy the story, but it's going to be a memorable journey of discussion and connection as well.
