We're participating in the Global Read Aloud! It begins today and we will read the first 2 chapters this week and connect/discuss with other classes. The book selected for Grades 2s and 3s is Marty McGuire by Kate Messner. It is going to be really neat to be reading a book at the same time as other children around the world. We looked at the participants map today to see where other classes are participating from.
Our first activity is to make a prediction. What do you think this book will be about and what might happen to Marty? Can't wait to see what you think!

Terry Fox Walk
We enjoyed a walk in Legion Park in Terry Fox's honor this morning. Mr. Kopecky led a group of students who wanted to run on a longer endurance run. It was amazing to see the kids bring in pledges. It is heartwarming to see kids being generous and giving what they can to an amazing cause.

Grandmother's Walk
What a beautiful morning to go for a walk! Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who were able to join us. (If you weren't able to be here in person, we were definitely thinking of you in spirit!) We walked to demonstrate support in honoring and protecting our children in the Swan Valley School Division.
Spelling City
I have a teacher account set up for our class to share on Spelling City. Your child can click on the link on the right hand side of our blog and enter my username and password (which they have copied into their agendas). Make sure you log in as a teacher/parent. You can also download the free Spelling City app onto your device (iPad, iPhone, and I believe iPod Touch) and enter the same login info. Once logged in, you will have access to all of our spelling words to practice online!
Good luck! Let me know if you need any assistance with this and I will be happy to help!

Buddy Reading
We spent some time today re-reading the story I introduced yesterday, called "Two Old Potatoes and Me". We are focusing on making connections as we read. We stop often, at least once a page ( or more often, if you're making more connections) to think if what we've just read reminds us of something that has happened to us or someone we know, something we've read, something we've watched, or something we've heard about before. Making connections helps us understand what we're reading better as we can indentify with the character's thoughts and feelings, helping us to understand the text better.
I was so pleased to see and hear students encouraging each other and helping each other! I work with awesome kids!

Happy New Year!!
Welcome to 3A! I hope you've had a fantastic summer!! I'm looking forward to getting to know you and working together with you and your family. I know that together we'll have an awesome year!
Mr. Kopecky shared an awesome video at our Welcome Back Assembly. Not only did it make us smile, but Kid President has some great tips for us as we start our new year! Enjoy! (and what are you going to do to make someone's day AWESOME?)
